The European Commission Chooses Atos Origin to Design, Build and Run European Internet Portal

InStranet's Content Application Infrastructure Powers the Publication, Organization, Distribution and Security of Content

Zaventem, March 24, 2003 – Atos Origin, a leading international IT services provider, has been chosen by the European Commission to design, build and run “PLOTEUS”, an internet portal on learning opportunities throughout Europe. The portal was introduced by the European Commission on March 5, 2003 and can be visited at www.ploteus.net. During the first week after the launch, PLOTEUS had more than 2 million hits, representing 30,000 visitors and 400,000 page views. Atos Origin selected InStranet’s content application infrastructure to power the publication, organization, distribution and security of content on the PLOTEUS site.

PLOTEUS provides a central access point (“one-stop-shop”) to access national/regional websites on learning opportunities. It includes information on all levels of education and training, from primary schools to higher education and adult education. The portal has a broad European dimension: beside the EU Member States, it covers the EFTA countries and the candidate countries. PLOTEUS aims to facilitate navigation among existing information resources on learning opportunities, i.e.:

  • links to websites of universities, databases on vocational training, lists or databases of primary and secondary schools etc.
  • links to general information, i.e. information on the country (cost of living, accommodation, etc.), education & training systems, programmes and initiatives, contact info, etc.
  • forum and chat facilities, which may be used by students and learners to exchange tips and experiences.

PLOTEUS is an acronym for Portal on Learning Opportunities Throughout the European Space, and is the ancient Greek word for ‘a guide to navigation’.

"Moving to another country and studying abroad are no longer restricted to any particular age or social group. Lifelong learning is a priority for the European Commission and the Member States. I am proud that PLOTEUS makes it easier to find the necessary information to study and train in another part of Europe. I encourage all Europeans to make intensive use of the PLOTEUS portal", said Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for education and culture.

Atos Origin handles all phases of the project, including:

  • Design, build and run of portal - Atos Origin started with the design and development of the portal in January 2002. The pilot portal was delivered in September 2002. Atos Origin manages the operational management and supports the local (national/regional) content teams. Content publishing, organization, distribution and security are based on software vendor InStranet’s content application infrastructure, which employs a multidimensional model for managing all types of Web content.
  • Hosting - Atos Origin provides value added hosting during the pilot and production phase.
  • Helpdesk - Atos Origin installed a helpdesk (located at the Atos Origin premises in Brussels) for the portal publishers (located in over 20 countries). The publishers can contact the helpdesk for questions, problems or suggestions concerning the publishing of content.
